Tufts Health Plan is a Massachusetts-based health plan nationally recognized for its commitment to providing innovative, high-quality health care coverage to its members.
Our HMO and POS products are ranked second in the nation and our Medicare Advantage HMO is ranked seventh in the nation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
Now available in Rhode Island, we offer an array of comprehensive coverage options with extras–like discounts on gym members and other programs–to help members stay healthy.

30 and Beyond—Focus on Excellence, Growth, and Community
| 2010 | NCQA ranks Tufts Health Plan HMO and POS plans No. 2 in the nation for the third time. In Rhode Island, we are the No. 1 health plan in that state. Our Medicare Advantage HMO is ranked No. 7 in the nation. It has been ranked in the Top 10 programs for the past 10 years. |
| 2009 | Tufts Health Plan's Rhode Island HMO, PPO, and Health Pact plans are launched. We receive the EPA's 4-Star Company designation for our outstanding achievement in reducing energy consumption. We sponsor the High School Inspirational 3K race in Providence, Rhode Island, for the first time. |
| 2008 | The Tufts Health Plan Foundation is launched. We enter the health insurance market in Rhode Island. |
| 2007 | The Advantage Saver products–HMO, PPO, and EPO–are offered for the first time, as well as HMO Select. We're ranked America's No. 2 health plan by NCQA/U.S. News & World Report for the second time in two years. |
| 2006 | We launch our Advantage HMO and CareLinkSM products. NCQA/U.S. News & World Report rank our HMO and POS plans America's No. 2 health plans. Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO is ranked the country's No. 3 Medicare Advantage plan. For the third year, Tufts Health Plan's Homelessness Prevention Initiative awards $1 million in grants to community-based programs. Our HMO, POS and PPO plans, as well as Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO, receive NCQA's highest accreditations. |
| 2005 | We're ranked America's No. 3 health plan by NCQA. For the second year in a row, J.D. Power and Associates recognizes Tufts Health Plan for "10 Consecutive Years of Excellence" and an "Outstanding Member Experience." We launch a comprehensive disease management program and care enhancement services for members. |
| 2004 | NCQA names Tufts Health Plan one of the country's "Top 10 Health Plans." J.D. Power and Associates designates Tufts Health Plan a "Distinguished Health Plan" for its commitment to excellence. Navigator by Tufts Health Plan™, a new PPO plan, is launched. We are the first health plan in the nation to receive the "Outstanding Customer Service Experience" award from J.D. Power and Associates. We provide expanded health and wellness offerings to members, including discounts on nutritional counseling, Curves® fitness center memberships, and Weight Watchers®. |
| 2003 | We're named one of the "Top 15 Accredited Health Plans in the Nation" by NCQA. Tufts Health Plan launches the Advantage PPO plan, the first in a series of Advantage plan designs. NCQA awards its highest accreditation to our HMO and POS plans, as well as to Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO. |
| 2002 | Our HMO is ranked "Highest in Overall Member Satisfaction" by J.D. Power and Associates. We launch a $1.5 million grant initiative to help Massachusetts teens in need of mental health services. We receive the American Association of Health Plan's Ellis J. Bonner Community Leadership Award for our Community Health Access for Seniors Effort. We launch our new Member Discounts program, offering discounts to members on health-related products and services. |
| 2001 | We celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women. Our HMO and POS plans–as well as Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO–receive NCQA's highest available accreditation for the second consecutive time. Tufts Health Plan Medicare Preferred receives the Senior Gold Choice Award for value. We launch a new discount program for massage therapy and acupuncture services from providers in our network. |
| 2000 | CareData Reports names Tufts Health Plan's HMO "Best Overall HMO" in the Boston area. Our Adult Pneumococcal Immunization Program is awarded First Prize by the American Association of Health Plan's Celebrating Innovations Awards. U.S. Track & Field selects the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women as the National 10K Championship Race. The American Association of Health Plans awards a First Place Award to our smoking cessation program for expectant mothers. |

Newsweek ranks Tufts Health Plan's HMO No. 2 in the nation. We're named to the U.S. News & World Report HMO Honor Roll for the third year in a row. Tufts Health Plan's HMO is ranked "Highest HMO" in the CareData Managed Care Satisfaction Study and Commercial Health Plan Member Survey. |
| 1997 | Our HMO and POS plans receive the National Committee for Quality Assurance's (NCQA's) highest accreditation. We're named to the U.S. News & World Report HMO Honor Roll for the second year in a row. |
| 1996 | Newsweek ranks Tufts Health Plan a top HMO in the U.S. U.S. News & World Report names Tufts Health Plan to its HMO Honor Roll. |
| 1995 | We expand regionally, offering our Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan in New Hampshire. We launch our Preferred Provider Organization and indemnity products. |
| 1994 | We introduce Secure Horizons®, Tufts Health Plan for Seniors (now Tufts Health Plan Medicare Preferred), the largest Medicare + Choice plan in eastern Massachusetts. |
| 1993 | U.S. Track & Field selects the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women as the National 10K Championship Race for the first time. |
Early Years—Many Firsts
| 1989 | Kids get into the act with the first 1K Fitness Walk for children at the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women. |
| 1986 | We're the first health maintenance organization in New England to offer a
Point-of-Service health plan. Tufts Health Plan is first Massachusetts health maintenance organization to offer its members fitness and other wellness programs. |
| 1985 | We sponsor the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women–previously the Bonne Belle 10K for Woman–for the first time. |
| 1981 | Tufts Health Plan launches its Health Maintenance Organization plan. We end our first year in business with 3,000 members. |
| 1979 | Morton Madoff, M.D., of Tufts University Medical School, founds Tufts Associated Health Maintenance Organization, Inc., the first health plan of its kind in New England. |
